SEBMF Pediatricians Participate in Program Intended to Develop Young Minds

Posted on Nov 9, 2017

Susan Adham, M.D.

When Dr. Susan Adham was a little girl growing up in Sunnyvale, she fondly remembered going to the library and reading book after book with her father. So when the Antioch and Brentwood pediatrician learned about a non-profit program called Reach Out and Read that incorporates books into pediatric care and encourages families to read to their children, she jumped at the chance to replicate the program here in the East Bay.

“Encouraging children to read at an early age promotes healthy brain development and provides a foundation for success,” says Adham. “Several studies have shown that exposing babies and young children to language and reading books in the first few years of their lives is vital in preparing them for kindergarten and beyond.”

Thanks to a $20,000 charitable gift from Better Health East Bay, Sutter Health’s East Bay philanthropic foundation, SEBMF pediatricians will provide books to children six months to five years of age at the end of each office visit.  All children will receive an age appropriate book that they can choose from with their parents.
