Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Neurology and Hospitalist Departments Grow

Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of seven new physicians to our organization: pediatricians F. Ralph Berberich, M.D., Petra Froehlich Landman, M.D., Steven Kowaleski, M.D. and Lisa Swearingen, M.D.; neurologist Antonio Silva-Sayago, M.D.; family medicine practitioner Francine Yep, M.D.; and hospitalist Maria Ait Rais, M.D.

Pediatrics

Four new pediatricans join SEBMF

Pediatricians Lisa Swearingen, M.D., F. Ralph Berberich, M.D., Petra Landman, M.D. and Steven Kowaleski, M.D.

F. Ralph Berberich, M.D., Petra Froehlich Landman, M.D., Steven Kowaleski, M.D. and Lisa Swearingen, M.D. joined Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation on Dec. 1. They will continue to see patients in their Berkeley office located at 2320 Woolsey Street, Suite 301.

Dr. Ralph Berberich was a founding partner of the Pediatric Medical Group, which is now part of the Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation pediatrics department. Dr. Berberich earned his medical degree from New York University. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at the University of California, San Diego. He then completed fellowships at the University of Washington and Stanford University.  He remained on the clinical faculty at Stanford University for several years.

Dr. Berberich is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain as well as the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Dr. Steven Kowaleski joined Pediatric Medical Group as a partner in 1984. He earned his medical degree from Ohio State University Medical School. He completed a pediatric internship and residency at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland.

Dr. Kowaleski volunteers with Kerry’s Kids Clinics, a nonprofit organization that serves uninsured patients and completes immunizations for Head Start and school entry. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Petra Landman joined Pediatric Medical Group as a partner in 1988. She earned an undergraduate degree in Human Biology at Stanford University, completed her medical education at the University of California, San Francisco and earned a master’s of science degree in Maternal and Child Health at Harvard University. She completed her pediatric internship, residency and chief residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, respectively.

Dr. Landman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics. She was recently recognized in Parents Press magazine and Oakland magazine for her inclusion in the Best Doctors® in America 2013 database. She is recognized as one of the East Bay’s best pediatricians. Physicians are included based on the result of an extensive, confidential peer-review process.

She is currently the vice chair of pediatrics at Alta Bates Hospital. She is assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at The University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Lisa Swearingen earned her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric internship and residency at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Swearingen is new to the Oakland-Berkeley community. She has been involved in volunteer activities internationally and in Southern California, including Downey School District Clinics, UCLA Bruin Buddies and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She has volunteered in Mexico, Ecuador and Cambodia with Child Family Health International.

Dr. Swearingen is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is fluent in English and Spanish.

All four pediatricians have privileges at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley and at Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland.

Neurology

Neurologist Antonio Silva joins SEBMF

Antonio Silva-Sayago, M.D., joined the Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation Neurology Department on Dec. 1. He is based at SEBMF’s Bluerock Care Center in Antioch. Dr. Silva completed his medical education at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Luis Razetti School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, associated with Yale University. Dr. Silva completed his residency in neurology at Boston Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

Following medical school, Dr. Silva was a physician in chief at Mavaca Clinic–Alto Orinoco. In this position he coordinated the Mavaca Rural Outpatient Clinic, providing health care and preventive medicine additives in 34 villages with a combined population of 6000. He also was a founding member of Tribal Outreach Medical Assistance in Venezuela (TOMA Venezuela).

Dr. Silva is board certified in neurology. He is fluent in English and Spanish. Dr. Silva has relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area from Massachusetts, and he has privileges at Sutter Delta Medical Center.

Family Medicine

Francine Yep, M.D. joins SEBMF Family Practice department

Francine Yep, M.D., joined Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation on Dec. 1, and is a member of the multi-specialty practice at the Oakland Care Center, located at 350 30th Street, Suite 100. She joins the primary care team of Drs. Alan Cohen, James Felt, Shirley Tucker-Harris, Josephine Agbowo and Kathryn Malone as well as Cyril Callister, PA-C.

Dr. Yep holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley–University of California, San Francisco Joint Medical Program, earning a medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco and a master of science in health and medical sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. She completed her residency at the Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency, affiliated with University of California, San Francisco. She is board certified in family medicine.

Dr. Yep has been a family medicine physician in the Oakland area for more than 19 years. She has privileges at the Berkeley and Oakland campuses of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.

Hospitalist Division

Maria Ait Rais, M.D. joins SEBMF Hospitalist division

Maria Ait Rais, M.D.

Maria Ait Rais, M.D. joined the hospitalist division at Eden Medical Center on Dec. 1. Her medical education was completed at the Universite Hassan II, Faculte de Medecine est de Pharmacie in Casablanca, Morocco. Dr. Ait Rais completed a residency in internal medicine at the Alameda County Medical Center, Highland Hospital in Oakland.

Dr. Ait Rais speaks English, French and Arabic fluently. She is eligible for board certification in internal medicine.

Dr. Ait Rais enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and experiencing international cuisines.
